Are You Living Like the Resurrection Fern?

Are You Living Like the Resurrection Fern?.

Have you heard of the resurrection fern? Jackie shares a beautiful description of how this represents our life with illness.

“The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom, like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.” (Isaiah 35:1)
Have you ever heard of the Resurrection Fern? I hadn’t until a very dear friend wrote me and told me that I resemble one. After I read about this fern, I felt honored that she felt that way and wanted to do my best to live up to its meaning.

It seems that this fern holds fast to the oak tree for its very sustenance. Until it rains, this little fern turns brown, curls up , and is very nondescript. Then when it does rain, it unfurls into a vibrant, deep emerald green plant, basking in the rain.

How often do we feel more like the fern that is all shriveled up and brown? We all have days when we are dealing with unrelenting pain, frustration with our physicians, and inept doctor’s offices. Or we lose our patience with insurance companies who want to deny our medication.

Some days it just seems to be too much.

We’ve all been there. These are our wilderness and desert days that can be so dreary. Yet something very unusual can happen in the depth of our frustration.

God in myriad ways brushes our hearts and rains peace and hope upon us. We are made like the beautiful Resurrection Fern that reaches out its deep green tendrils and says that we can rise again from desolation to joyous living.

Refreshing ourselves in His Presence causes us to unfurl into a living, vibrant spirit that is not defined by our illness but by our soaking up His Presence.

Prayer: Dearest Lord, we look to You for sustenance. In our wilderness days, thank You that you don’t leave us there. Thank You for bringing newness of life when we wait on You. Help us to blossom even in the desert. Amen.
